DGATV’s 15th Anniversary! (Dec. 6, 2021)

We’ve come a long way since that first meeting in the Shelburne legion in early 2006 when local riders got together to explore the possibility of launching a local family friendly ATV riding club.

The initial days as an informal Headwaters ATV Club under President Bill Hill brought us together with Centre Grey ATV Club under President Vera Lloyd to form a combined and newly minted Dufferin Grey ATV Club formally incorporated on December 6, 2006 and registered as a club in good standing with the Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs (OFATV).

With a lot of enthusiasm and much going on, we have barely looked back.

So we take this time to give thanks.

We thank our Volunteers.

DGATV’s Executive Board has generally consisted of seven (7) Directors with two-year terms, half standing for election in alternate years. Most of our keenest riders have volunteered as Directors at some time or another,  and under their guidance the club has grown from a mere 50 members to around 630 today.

Volunteers maintain, monitor and Warden around 500 kms of trail extending and looping from north of Orangeville almost to Owen Sound along the former rail line backbone through two counties and multiple municipalities.  Volunteers also administer the club, liaise with local municipalities and law enforcement, and provide representation at trade shows and at the OFATV regional level.

We also thank our Sponsors.  Our Sponsors have been there providing help, funds, prizes, entertainment and advice kindly and consistently upon request and often electively.

We thank our Land Owners & Stewards for the use of their land ensuring our rides are scenic, interesting and enjoyable.

We thank our Members.  By choosing DGATV you provide us with funds to develop the trails, and incentive to keep going.

This club would not exist without all of you.

Today, going into our 16th season, we hold true to our mission statement with as much verve and commitment as ever:

Our club’s mission is to provide a safe, responsible, environmentally sound and enjoyable outdoor experience for our riders. In doing so, we will benefit both our riders and our local communities. We will promote the safe and responsible operation of All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs, side-by-sides) protecting riders and non-riders alike. We will promote environmental awareness, protecting the natural resources we all want to enjoy. We will promote tourism, providing our riders with places of interest to visit and our communities with the economic benefits that result.

Ontario Trumpeter Swans (2021)

Seeing trumpeter swans near the trail is always a highlight of a ride.  These beautiful birds are picturesque and evidence of a healthy ecosystem.  If we’re lucky the swans come back each summer to raise their families, and we get to know these lovely neighbours as the cygnets flourish under the watchful eye of their parents.

Last year DGATV members were upset to hear that irresponsible rail trail use resulted in harm to a family of swans.  The injuries to the mother swan resulted in her death so we’re not sure if the swans will return this season.  We know the father swan was last seen in Toronto on his southward migration so we are hopeful that we’ll see him again.  As a result of this incident, DGATV’s Board of Directors pledged support for the swans and made a donation to the Ontario Trumpeter Swan Restoration program (facebook group).

We ask ATVers to ride safely and carefully, and to be respectful when driving by people, pets and wildlife alike.

Riding the trails are a privilege and not a right.  Abuse it and lose it.

*** UPDATE:  We are happy to announce that the male swan has returned to the area with another female.  We consider ourselves lucky!  Please ride carefully around the swans.

DGATV Autumn Ride (2019) Donation

Our Club President, Tim Allen and Events Coordinator, Jamie Thurman were proud to present $420 and over 100 lbs of food to Marian Doyle of the Gentle Shepherd food bank on behalf of all of our club members and guests who came out to our #RideForHunger last week.

It warms our hearts when we see like-minded outdoor enthusiasts getting together for such a great cause.

A special thank you to all who came out and hope to see you again soon!

Marian says “Thanks Dufferin Grey ATV Club for your support for the Flesherton Food Bank. Your donation will help us to purchase hamburg and milk for the next month and half.”

We’re glad to help!

Ride for MRI / CGHS Foundation Fundraiser (2019)

What a Fabulous Day!

On September 14, 2019, Dufferin Grey ATV Club (DGATV) happily hosted a charity ride for Centre Grey Health Services Foundation with the assistance of Volunteers from Grey Highlands Fire & Emergency Services who provided a hot lunch. Riders brought in $1,350 in donations, which DGATV matched for a total of $2,700 going directly towards the new MRI machine for Owen Sound Hospital.

We had 50 machines out and our ride was approximately 80 kms, which was completed with no incidents or bad weather. Fun was had by all and and it was nice to see not just familiar faces but some new ones too!

We want to thank everyone who came out, and those who helped but were unable to be with us. Many items were donated and our raffle seemed to go on forever with some great donations from local businesses and supporters.

Thanks again to all our Directors, Wardens and Members for the hard work in putting together these rides, and thanks to all our Landowners, Sponsors, Supporters, and Riders. We have just as much fun putting on the events as you do coming to them!

Hope to see you all at the next one!

Our Directors Say …

Great work by all the executives of DGATV on our MRI ride today. Over 50 machines participated in the ride and generously donated $1,350 to help in the purchase of a new MRI unit for Grey Bruce Health services. The club then matched that donation which enables us to make a total donation of $2,700.

We also had Grey Highlands firefighters bbq lunch for the riders which raised $400 for them.

Our club members and guest riders are some of the most generous people around and are always willing to support our community!

And lastly, my grandson Brecken came along to help us run the event and won a door prize, which turned out to be one of his favorite things, tools! What an awesome day and ride!
